Just how much more do AWD's weigh?

Hi all,

from another thread that was sidetracking to the different weights of the FWD vs AWD Magna, I got curious on the exact details.

I had previously collected the following stats on the TJ AWDs:
Kerb mass Magna 1604kgs Sports 1624kgs Verada 1643kgs

and wikipedia says that the AWD was "up to 140 kg" heavier than the FWD.
But it also says that the 3rd gen FWD weighs 1372kg - that's 230-270kg less than the above weights that I had collected from a different site. Oh, what to believe! ????

People with either a TJ, TL and TW FWD, what's on your rego papers? MY TJ Sports AWD says 1613kg on the rego.

For TJII kurb weights, Redbook states:

1468kg - Exec Auto
1506kg - Sports Auto
1648kg - AWD Exec
1670kg - AWD Sports


From the mitsi brochures I have here (in PDF format)..
1604 - AWD Exec
1624 - AWD Sports
1644 - AWD Verada

Also, the weights of a particular car would vary depending on options fitted, etc..
For example, my Exec AWD has carpets, towbar and the sports wing.

Yeah, i just saw an article/review that noted a 162kg increase in weight.

My KW Verada GTVi AWD has a kerb mass close to 1700kg.

This is what Mitsubishi quote in the service manual:

• TH Sports Auto 1498kg
  
  TJ Sports Auto 1505kg
  
  Ralliart Auto 1550kg
  
  TJ Sports AWD 1625kg
  
  TL VR Auto 1547kg
  
  TL VR AWD 1670kg

So seems like about 120kg heavier

You have to bear in mind that the quoted increase is not solely the addition of the AWD drive train. Some of the AWD versions also had extra features over the equivalent FWD models.

for reference, when it was emissions tested my TJ Advance (in auto guise) weighed a smidge over 1600kg with about 3/4 tank of fuel and a medium sized (80-90kg) guy in it.

aren't kerb weights dry (i.e. no fluids at all)?

Kerb weight is the "dry" weight so no fuel no people in it. Had my VRX AWD at the tip the other day weight in was 1890kg, 3/4 tank, me (110ish kg) and a lot of garden waste and 20 odd litres of old engine oil. when I drove out I was 1840kg. So taking me and 50 litres of fuel the equation would give me a dry kerb mass of 1680kg. give or take the super accuracy of the scales 1670kg would be the dry weight kerb mass, alas lining up wth the details from Mitsubishi. Thank goodness for the bigger brakes!!
